Once you’ve settled into your customizable luxury loft in Surfside, one place you’ll want spend some leisure time is North Shore Open Space Park, a lush 36-acre park just steps from 88Hundred Collins. Located east of Collins Avenue from 79th Street to 87th Street, North Shore Open Space Park is not only one of the largest in Miami, but the only beachfront park that includes public grills and picnic pavilions.
The park features native vegetation, coastal hammocks, and acres of beautiful white sand dunes. As you wend your way toward the pristine beach, you’ll pass a series of strategically placed outdoor exercise equipment, children’s play equipment, showers, restrooms, and a virtual forest of green, shady trees. Feel free to bring your pup along, because the park also offers two enclosed dog parks, one designated for small dogs and another for larger dogs. If you’re looking for a place to relax and unwind, you can’t beat North Shore.
You’ll enjoy it even more once West 8, the internationally renowned design firm, completes its $6.5 million redesign. West 8, with more than 70 architects, urban designers, landscape designers and industrial engineers, has projects underway or completed in Spain, Colombia, and Russia, among others. And they were the creative minds behind the spectacular SoundScape Park in front of Miami’s New World Symphony on Washington Avenue and 17th Street. Their work was recognized by Travel & Leisure Magazine, which voted it one of the Best Outdoor Movie Theaters in America following the project’s completion in 2011.
West 8 plans to preserve large patches of natural beachfront habitat, and improve access to the waterfront.
Capital Improvement Projects Director David Martinez offers further details. “This project proposes to enhance the landscape and walkability of the park, with the purpose of preserving its passive and natural character. Our goal is to improve safety and park amenities,” he said. “The park’s vision plan includes an expanded network of walking paths, new park lighting, new shade structures, revitalized lawns, iconic gateways, a beach walk extension, tree pruning and removal of invasive plants.”
In addition, one element of the plan includes a new 4,000-square-foot building containing concessions, restrooms and Ocean Rescue offices, which will flank the south end of the park. The revamped park will also feature more than two miles of concrete paths weaving throughout to accommodate runners, joggers, rollerbladers and, yes, those who just prefer to stroll. Improvements will also include award-winning LED light poles for enhanced visibility, as well as new signs and fencing to more clearly mark park entrances and perimeters.
And this is just one of the numerous amenities you’ll enjoy once you settle in to your luxurious condominium loft at 88Hundred Collins, slated to open in 2018.
